Overview:

Wilderness exploration and nights under open skies provide an authentic sense of freedom and clarity for many outdoor enthusiasts.  Guided Hiking and Camping at Cameron Pass will build the skills and experience you need to comfortably and confidently begin your journey in the mountains.  In five days, our professional guides teach you how to plan your day hikes and overnight camping trips so you can explore your passion for the mountains on your own and confidently camp with friends or solo under the stars.

This five-day program is the thorough initiation you are looking for especially if you are just beginning to explore the mountains.  We start from the very basics and introduce you to the fundamental joys of exploring natural landscapes, hiking, campcraft, safety, and preparedness. The first 2 days and nights will focus on hiking and group travel skills while staying at the Colorado Mountain School Yurt at Cameron Pass.  On the 3rd and 4th days and nights, you will learn and apply backcountry camping skills near Lake Agnes or the American Lakes.  By the end of this course, you will be able to plan short day trips into the mountains as well as overnight camping excursions, and you will be better prepared for new challenges and rewards of your life in the mountains so you can enjoy the freedom of the hills.

Details:

Learn about Hiking and Camping from the comfort of the beautiful Seven Utes Yurt situated in wild Cameron Pass.  Let us take care of all your food and meals during your stay!  This big Yurt has a loaded kitchen, propane and wood heat, a giant deck, plenty of comfortable cots, water super close, and portable toilets. The Seven Utes Yurt is at approximately 9400’ elevation and is located right off the road with plenty of parking nearby.  2 of the 4 nights you will stay at the Yurt, and 2 of the nights you will camp in tents in State Forest State Park.

Sample Itinerary:

Day One (11am – 7:30pm): Welcome to the Seven Utes Yurt at Cameron Pass in State Forest State Park. Learn about trip preparation and group travel techniques and go for an afternoon hike in State Forest State Park. Enjoy the comforts of the Seven Utes Yurt overnight with a hot, delicious meal from the kitchen and breathtaking views everywhere outside.

Day Two (8am-4pm):  Enjoy the backcountry and learn navigation techniques on a day hike in State Forest State Park. Return to the Seven Utes Yurt before departing in the afternoon.

Day Three (9am-6:30pm):  Review camping principles before launching into the field for the first night of backcountry camping at the American Lakes.

Day Four (9am-6:30pm): Learn more camping skills and enjoy day hikes and leisure time in the wilderness.  Spend another night camping at Lake Agnes or the American Lakes.

Day Five (8am-4pm): Transference.  Return to the Seven Utes Yurt for a Course Debrief.  Depart from the Yurt in the afternoon.

Lodging:

Lodging at Colorado Mountain School’s Seven Utes Yurt at State Forest State Park on Cameron Pass is available for you and is included for the first 2 nights. The 40 foot yurt is spacious and comfortable with propane heat and a wood-burning stove for especially cold days. Enjoy beautiful mountain views and stargazing from the large deck. The yurt is located directly off the road next to the Michigan River. There is plenty of parking and access to pristine hiking trails. It has a full kitchen with appliances, dishes, and utensils for all our cooking needs, 16 comfortable sleeping cots, and portable toilets nearby.

For the following 2 nights, you will camp in a tent in State Forest State Park. 3-season tents will be provided for all participants to use.

You should be prepared to hike a maximum of 6-8 miles per day during the excursions, yet some days will be less. Of course basic physical fitness and training will make the experience more enjoyable.
