This five-day rock climbing camp focuses on leading single pitch and multi-pitch trad rock routes and rock climbing rescue.

Overview:

By the end, students will be prepared to lead their own multi-pitch trad climbs at any climbing venue in the world. This course is packed with climbing mileage and culminates with a long multi-pitch rock route.  Common areas for this climb include Eldorado Canyon State Park, The Flatirons and Rocky Mountain National Park. If the five-day course is too long, we recommend taking some of our two day courses like the Learn to Lead Trad course.

 

Details:

This course covers the skills that are essential to becoming a reliable climbing partner.

Routes are not predetermined.  Our guides will make the decision during the outing based on the interests and ability levels of participants.

Potential climbing areas include Boulder Canyon, Eldorado Canyon, The Flatiron s and Lumpy Ridge in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Sample Itinerary:

Day 1: Learn to Lead Trad: Risk management, Placing gear and building anchors, Choosing routes, Reading guidebooks, Route-finding, Racking, Climbing signals and communication, Strategic use of quickdraws and slings

Day 2: Learn to Lead Trad (continued): Positive mental attitude, Retreating from a lead, Fixed protection, Aiding out of trouble, Mock leads and critiques

Day 3: Crack Climbing Clinic: Taping, Footwear, Hand jams, Foot jams, Finger jams, Laybacking, Introduction to off-size jamming.

Day 4: Rock Rescue:  Learn to escape the belay, ascend and descend a rope, build raising and lowering systems

Day 5: Take all your new skills for a spin on a long multi-pitch rock route.

These are “hiking” shoes specifically made for approaching and descending from a climbing venue where scrambling is necessary, or even for climbing an entire route. They have sticky climbing rubber on the bottom and a formed fit to influence better climbing abilities while scrambling. Consider high-tops for additional ankles support if needed. Regular hiking boots or athletic shoes may be acceptable for many climbs.

For all seasons, cotton, loose-fitting (or tight, stretchy) pants are usually acceptable for rock climbing. Shorts are acceptable during the summer – though shorts expose the knees and shins to abrasions. New climbers are encouraged to wear pants or capris. A synthetic material (like in softshell pants) may be required by your guide due to potential rain storms.

Technical rock shoes are required. For beginning climbers, having a looser fit is advisable. In this case, loose means that toes are touching the front of the shoes when standing, but are not forced against the front of the shoe. In colder weather, thin socks inside climbing shoes are a great option. On long routes, rock shoes should be comfortable enough to wear for day.
