Chile Ski & Splitboard
Skiing in the summer – Heck Yeah! Chile has been a well-kept secret for backcountry riding and ski-mountaineering for decades…but the secret’s out!!! This 10-day deluxe Chile ski trip provides a balance of Chilean culture, incredible views of the Andes, and world-class on and off-piste skiing. Unlike, the American West, there are few roads leading high into the
Andes. And, like the European Alps, much of Chile’s backcountry skiing/riding is accessed by riding the resort lifts to a high point and then continuing further from there. In this style of backcountry riding, you get lots of vertical without as much of the uphill effort! And, you get to finish the day with on-piste laps in incredible above-treeline terrain.

The trip begins its three section series in Santiago - in only 1.5 hours from the airport, you will find yourself making turns in the Three Valleys ski resorts of Valle Nevado, El Colorado, and La Parva. Day 1 will include a Companion Rescue refresher and on-piste skiing to warm up the summer legs. Your guide will also give instruction on backcountry and steep skiing techniques to prepare you for the following days. The next couple of days use the lifts to access 13,000+ft backcountry peaks with views of El Plomo (17,795’/5424m). Evenings are spent in the hot tub with complimentary wine and cheese in your group’s chalet. World Class Heli-skiing with 3-5,000ft runs are available during these days (Heli fees not included in trip price).
From the Three Valleys, the trip ventures south to the small ski town of Malalcahuello, where Ski Corralco rests against the southern flank of Volcan Lanquimay (9,400ft/2865m). See the uniquely stunning Araucaria trees as you drive through the National Reserve on the way to the lifts. Volcan Lanquimay and the surrounding area offer incredible vistas into the Argentine Andes, as well as a 4,500ft run from the top of the volcano. Evenings are spent enjoying the array of excellent restaurants and visits to the local hot springs/spa.
The final section of the trip is based in Los Andes. To the east, you will make your way to the border of Chile and Argentina where you will find Chile’s oldest and most well-known ski resort, Ski Portillo. Portillo sports world-class on and off-piste terrain, including the world famous Super C Couloir, a 5,000ft couloir that drops you back at the lift so you can celebrate your achievement at Tio Bob’s, everyone’s favorite resort restaurant with unparalleled views of Laguna del Inca and the valley above.
The trips ends with a day of Cat Skiing (included in the price). An hour drive from your hotel takes you up a winding dirt road through small farming villages to a quaint Cat Skiing outfit owned by Toni Sponar, a 1934-born Austrian ski instructor from Aspen, Colorado. The Cat winds through the valley and in only 20-minutes of story-filled travel, you step out onto the peak and standing there in front of you is Aconcagua (22,841’/6962m), the highest peak outside of the Himalayas and the second tallest peak of the Seven Summits. Finish the trip with 3-4,3000ft runs before you pile into the van and head to the airport for your evening red-eye flight.
Trip Participants should be advanced to expert resort skiers/riders and have some experience riding in the backcountry. AIARE Level 1 required (or comparable avalanche 1 course). An Introduction to Ski-Mountaineering (or Introduction to Mountaineering) with CMS (or other climbing school) will ease the learning curve of ski-mountaineering. Skiers will be using Alpine Touring ski equipment and snowboarders will be using Splitboards.
Trip Participants will have a better experience and be able to participate in all the planned activities having trained cardio-vascular strength through uphill hiking, running, cycling, or mountain biking, as well as a daily regimen of core-strengthening exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, squats, yoga, cross-fit, etc. Having gotten a fair amount of skiing/riding during the previous winter will be helpful.
