Spearhead: North Ridge


This 2 day Spearhead Rock Climbing Course focuses on preparing to and climbing a multi pitch alpine route in Rocky Mountain National Park. By the end, students will have experienced alpine rock route in RMNP. This course covers the logistics required to climb a multi pitch rock route with a planned bivy the night before the climb: bivy permits, light weight camp set ups, food planning. Plus efficiency on a multi pitch rock climb, including climbing signals and communication, multi pitch prep: route finding and risk management. This course is designed to give intermediate climber the experience of climbing alpine rock route in RMNP. The North Ridge 5.6 on Spearhead is a popular objective for this course.

Course Details


Experience following a multipitch route, ability to hike 6 miles with overnight pack.


Day 1: 8am - 6pm; Day 2: 5am - 5pm

Sample Itinerary:

Day 1: Plan and prepare for an overnight and alpine climbing outing.  Hike into Glacier Gorge in RMNP (6 miles). Set up bivy camp below Spearhead, cook dinner and sleep under the stars.

Day 2: Alpine start to climb the North Ridge (5.6) of Spearhead. After the climb, we'll grab our bivy sacs and head back to the trail head.


With a sixteen-bed lodge available exclusively to Colorado Mountain School students, you can spend your entire weekend in Estes Park without the hassle of commuting. Our lodge is conveniently located in downtown Estes Park with a full kitchen, WiFi and hot showers. Lodging must be book separately for $30/night. Please call our office for reservations.
