Colorado Mountain School Head Guide
Joey was born in Cheektowaga, New York, but quickly migrated west to bigger terrain. In his youth, Joey climbed and skied the country looking for the next big adventure. He spent years honing his craft in Yosemite, Moab, Valdez, Red Rocks, and put up numerous first ascents in the Arizona dessert. When he grew tired of living in his pickup truck, he trained hard and became a member of ski patrol in Summit County, Colorado. Fifteen years ago, Joey T began training with the American Mountain Guides Association and has never has never looked back. Today, he lives here in the Front Range with his wonderful wife Susan and Labrador retriever Honcho.
CMS is proud to have Joey’s expertise in rock, ice and snow. On his days off (he rarely takes the day off), he can usually be found carrying a rope, rack and skis on his back. Even on personal time, Joey takes his outdoor pursuits very seriously. When asked what type of skiing a person prefers, most respond with “steep” or “powder” or “corn”, but not Joey – his answer was “fifty degree convexity rolls in armpit deep pow”.
Joey is an IFMGA Certified Mountain Guide, a Wilderness First Responder, a Single Pitch Instructor Program Provider, an AIARE Level 2 Lead Instructor, and is certified Level 3 with both AIARE and the American Avalanche Institute. Get out in the mountains with Joey and see why he has been known to bring the magic!
