The Snow Pack Membership

Introducing the Future of Avalanche Training

In spring of 2020, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic changed our world forever, but with this change came opportunity. For years, we’ve been planning the future of avalanche training, but we just needed a little push to build it. Well, the push was actually a shove and after months of behind the scenes work, we are excited to announce a new and improved student experience this winter:

Snow Pack Logo

The Snow Pack membership is a combination of tried and true field work, and cutting-edge online tools and resources, bringing you more convenience, more education and more community. As soon as you register for any AIARE 1 or AIARE 2 course, you’ll gain access to our online membership site, chock full of educational content and special opportunities.

Here’s what you can expect from the Snow Pack structure when you take your AIARE 1 or AIARE 2 avalanche training with Colorado Mountain School:

AIARE Coursework

AIARE avalanche training courses are action-packed, combining online coursework and tons of field instruction to provide participants with a solid introduction to avalanche awareness and backcountry travel skills.

New for 2020/21

We’ve moved the entire AIARE 1 indoor classroom time to an online platform where you can watch videos of our instructors, read case studies, take quizzes and much more–all at your own pace.

Because of the heavier focus on application and observations, AIARE 2 courses will be fully taught in the field and will not have online classroom work.

Finish Your AIARE Course in the Field

After finishing your online prep, you’ll complete your course in the mountains, where physical distancing is part of the fun.

AIARE 2 courses will be in the field all three days. AIARE 1 “Split” courses will go into the field Saturday/Sunday, as usual. AIARE 1 three-day courses will meet on days 1-2, 2-3 or 1-3 to help us spread out pods. Your instructor will contact you with details on logistics, including which days your pod will be in the field and how to submit pod requests, two weeks prior.

On your “bye day,” rest the arches or double down by enrolling in another guided adventure or course.

Your AIARE course is just one piece of the avalanche awareness puzzle. We’re excited to offer new opportunities for students to go beyond the curriculum and learn more from our professional mountain guides.
